European Oat Scientist Delegation Visit Baicheng

Invited by the president of the Baicheng Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Mr. Ren Changzhong, the national chief scientist on oats, Mr. Seppo from Finnish Ministry of Agriculture, Dr. Trond and Dr. Alf, chief oat breeder in Norway and Sweden respectively (both of them are members of the Oats International Committee), and Dr. Elina from Finland Agricultural Research Institute who is an well-known expert on double haploid oats breeding visited China for academic exchange over the period from Sep.20^th and 25^th.

Mr. Ren exchanged 26 different kinds of oat germplams with the European scholars. Mr. Sepppo, who is the Secretary-general of Grains Association, Finland Ministry of Agriculture and the Chairman of the Seventh International Oats Committee of Helsinki in 2004, presented about the basic situation on agriculture and the development of oats in Finland. After knowing the fact that the Baicheng Academy of Agricultural Sciences had built an a China-Canada Science and Innovation Center on oats with the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Mr. Seppo said that he would discuss with the Finnish Ministry of Agriculture for building an China-Finland R & D center on Oats. Dr. Trond, who had visit Baicheng once, reported on the oat breeding methods, objectives, production and application in Norway. Dr. Alf introduced the situation of oat breeding, production and application in Sweden. Dr Elina, who had made significant achievement in double haploid technology breeding of Oats in 1996, reported on the important functions of the oat gene mapping, the laboratory for the double haploid technology of oats anther culture and field production methods, and expressed the willingness to help the Baicheng Academy of Agriculture Science carry out the training and application of this technology.

The European experts visited the area of oat double-cropping. When seeing that the oats had been growing well, they praised Mr. Ren Changzhong greatly for the work he had done. The experts also visited the anti-wind experiment area, and they were convinced by the fact that oats is not only an important grain crop, but also plays an important role in saline-alkali soil management, anti-wind erosion, water-saving, and so on in China. Pro. Hu Yingang and Dr. Hu Xinzhong from Northwest A&F University accompanied the visit activity too, and made an in-depth exchange with the European experts.

Through this communication, we got the chance to show the oats breeding, production, cultivation and application procedure to foreign experts, and also exchanged the germplasm resource of oats with the European scientist, established the bridge of international cooperation and introduced the advanced the double oat anther culture technology.
